Prayer 101: How Do I Pray When I Don't Know How?

Prayer 101: How Do I Pray When I Don't Know How?

Prayer. For some it's a daily ritual, for others it's a last resort when nothing else is working. Either way, with our phones in our pockets, we live in an age that isn't exactly friendly to prayer. So how do you actually talk to God? Are there right words? And what if you don't hear any answers back? If prayer feels complicated to you, or you don't know where to start, here's a practical guide for complete beginners.

"When it comes to prayer, we are all beginners." — Teresa of Ávila

So what actually is prayer?

Forget for a moment the idea that prayer is just a memorized poem or some formal text you have to recite to get the "right effect." Prayer is a conversation with God — authentic, personal, and real. You don't need special words, the right tone of voice, or fancy sentences. Just be honest.

Prayer isn't about knowing more about God. Prayer is about living more with God.

Prayer isn't a ritual you use to earn God's favor so he'll notice you. God is already here, waiting for us to start talking to him. Prayer is a way of entering into a relationship with him and living with the awareness that God is with you.

"The Bible is the letter God sent to us; prayer is the letter we send back to him." — Matthew Henry

How do you pray? 3 simple steps

1️⃣ Start simple — like you're talking to a friend

Imagine you're texting someone close to you. What would you write if you wanted to tell them what's on your mind right now? That's what your prayer can look like too. It doesn't need to be long or flowery. Feel free to say something like:

💬 "God, I'm here and I want to talk to you, but I don't know how. Help me figure it out."

God isn't a strict teacher grading your "prayer grammar." There's no single prescribed style of prayer — no required position to be in or tone to use. In prayer we come to God in conversation as a loving Father who longs to hear your voice. That's why, when the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, he introduced them to God as Father — not as the one correct method of prayer, but as the perspective we're meant to bring when we come to God.

"This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven...'" (Matthew 6:9)

2️⃣ Use a formula: Gratitude – Confession – Request

If you don't know how to start talking to God, a simple structure can help:

Gratitude — Thank God for something good in your life. ('Thank you, God, for today, for the people around me, for never forgetting about me...')

Confession — Be honest about what you're struggling with. ('You know, I'm running out of strength today and I don't know where I'll find the motivation for tomorrow's work. I just can't do it on my own, I need your help.')

Request — Tell God what's weighing on you. ('I need wisdom for how to decide in this situation...')

3️⃣ Don't forget to listen

Prayer isn't just a monologue. Prayer is a conversation. Nobody likes it when other people just talk at them and never give them room to respond. Make space during prayer to go quiet, let your thoughts flow, and just listen. Don't necessarily expect a voice from heaven, even though that can sometimes happen too. Focus on your inner stillness, on the thoughts that come to your heart — you can open the Bible and read until something in the text speaks to you. Sometimes God answers through other people, through events, or through the deep peace that comes when you hand him your worries.

When and where should you pray?

👉 Anytime — God isn't only available between 9 and 5. You can pray in the morning, in the evening, in the shower, while waiting for the bus, or on a walk. The early Christians picked up the prayer practice of their Jewish predecessors and prayed three times a day. Can you turn prayer into a regular habit?

👉 Anywhere — You don't have to be in a church or some special place. You can pray in bed, on a walk, on public transit, at a café, even while cooking or before an exam. There's no place where God isn't. Learn to experience God's presence in every moment of your life.

👉 Any way — You can pray out loud, silently in your mind, write prayers on your phone, sing them, or just be quiet before God. Christians have practiced silent meditation from the very beginning. In silence they experienced God's presence. Without having to talk constantly, they were quiet together with God. Whatever prayer practice feels right to you is fine.

And what if I don't feel any response?

Maybe you're trying to pray and it feels like nothing is happening. That's normal — Christians experience this, and it's part of a normal spiritual life. God isn't a wish-granting machine. Sometimes he answers differently than we expect. Maybe he wants to point you toward a different path than you imagined, or he's teaching you patience. Sometimes even silence is an answer. But keep going — prayer isn't just about getting an instant answer, it's about building a relationship with God. It's about learning to let go of our own plans and letting God reveal what he has prepared for us. He's still that good "Our Father who is in heaven," remember?

💡 Tip: If prayer is new to you, try making a small commitment: pray for even just one minute every day. It's not about the number of words, but about a heart that's slowly getting used to coming back to God and speaking to him.

If you still don't know how to start, here's a prayer you could try right now:

💬 "God, I want to know you. Help me learn to talk to you. Give me the courage to be honest with you. Thank you for hearing me. Amen."

Don't worry, you're on the right track. May prayer walk with you!
