The biggest mistake Christians make: Why rules will never replace a relationship with God

SafePoint Talk Jon Maurer 9/9/2025

Rules won't save you. A real life with God starts with humility and honesty.

When faith stops at rules

When people hear the word "faith," a lot of them picture rules. What's allowed, what isn't, what's permitted and what counts as sin. But that's exactly where the biggest trap is hiding. Faith isn't a checklist — it's a relationship. You can check every box, look like a "good Christian" to everyone around you, and still be empty inside. Jon Maurer's talk, a guest speaker from California, "Confession of a Former Pharisee," captures this perfectly: a person can look godly and still just be an actor in a well-rehearsed performance.

A story that exposes the heart

Jesus tells a parable about two men who went up to the temple. One was a Pharisee, known for his piety, and the other a tax collector, despised and hated. The Pharisee stood up front and prayed loudly enough for everyone to hear: 'God, I thank you that I am not like everyone else — thieves, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast and I give tithes.' His prayer was more of a performance than a conversation with God.

The tax collector stayed in the back. He didn't even dare lift his eyes, and just beat his chest, saying: 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' And Jesus said that this man, not the Pharisee, went home justified. Why? Because God doesn't look at the facade. He looks at the heart.

The trap of the mask and the pose

In his talk, Jon Maurer admits that he himself lived like a Pharisee for a long time. He looked great — he prayed out loud, knew all the right words, went to church, gave money, avoided the "forbidden things." He defined himself by what he didn't do — he didn't drink, didn't smoke, didn't watch "inappropriate" movies, didn't listen to "bad" music. But all of it was just a pose. He was an imitation Christian — someone playing a role instead of living a real relationship with God.

This is way more relevant than you might think. Maybe you don't experience it in exactly this way, but you know that feeling of having to look strong, right, flawless. You show the world your mask — on Instagram, at school, at work. But inside, you might feel empty and alone.

Why rules aren't enough

The Pharisees weren't bad people. Quite the opposite — they cared about purity, they prayed, they fasted, they knew the Bible, they pursued righteousness. They were the kind of neighbors you'd want to have. But Jesus told them a clear no. Because religion without relationship is dead. The most important thing was missing — real love and humility before God.

When faith turns into a set of obligations, it becomes an empty routine. You can look spiritual and still be far from God on the inside. God doesn't want your perfect performance. He longs for your heart.

The power of humility

The tax collector in the parable is a picture of real faith. He wasn't performing, and his record wasn't clean. But he had something God is looking for — humility. He admitted he was broken, weak, and in need of grace. And that's exactly where a real relationship with God begins. Humility opens the doors that pride shuts.

Maybe you think you can only come to God once you've gotten your life in order. But it's actually the opposite. God calls you the moment you admit you can't handle it on your own. That's not a defeat — it's the start of a new path.

Faith in today's world

Maybe you're thinking, "I'm not the religious type, this doesn't apply to me." But the principle is the same outside of church too. We all wear masks. We want to be seen as successful, strong, cool. But reality is often different — inside, we're wrestling with pressure, comparison, anxiety. And this is exactly where God shows up, offering a relationship that's real and free.

You don't have to check off a list of rules for Him to accept you. You don't have to be flawless. You just need to be honest.

What this means for you

Try looking in the mirror and asking yourself a few questions. Do you find some of the Pharisee in yourself? Do you often catch yourself judging others? Or defining yourself by what you don't do, instead of a real relationship with God? If so, admit it. That's the first step toward change.

Next time you catch yourself comparing yourself to others and thinking "I'm not like them," stop. This isn't the way. Faith isn't about being better than others. It's about being closer to God.

A real beginning

Picture yourself standing in the temple next to the Pharisee and the tax collector. Who do you resemble more? Maybe you feel like you have to be like the Pharisee — have it all together, look perfect. But the good news is, God isn't waiting for your perfection. He's waiting for your honesty.

Real faith begins the moment you stop trying to play the game and, for the first time, honestly say: "God, I need you." That's when a relationship begins — one that isn't about rules, but about life. And that's something no religious obligation could ever replace.
